NYM (VinylAddicted & Jean Claude Gavri Edit)

It should come as no surprise that we have yet another dancefloor tumper hailing from SleazyMcQueen's Whiskey Disco records, this time from Jean Claude Gavri and VinylAddicted. The offering is a four to the floor, no questions asked disco number. String pads slowly emerge from the depths of a simple 4 bar loop and in the blink of an eye turn into stabs as the track builds to its climax.
Make sure to also check out the B side of this upcoming release, a trippy, beefed up edit of Loleatta Holloway's Hit & Run that is sure to please.

Hayden James - Something About You

Sit back in your chair and strap yourself in for the ride, this is Hayden James. Breaking it down with his attack of Soulful Electronic beats.

Mr Bongo - Latin 45 #1

Connoisseur of Brazilian and African grooves, Mr. Bongo is set to release a host of 7 inches delving into the deliciousness from the world of Latin music. First up are two latin classics, Pete Rodriguez on the A side with 'I Like It Like That', and on the flip Joe Bataan's 'Subway Joe', both big big hits from the label that IS latin music, Fania Records. Both tracks are jam packed with jive worthy percussion and rhythm sections, however the pick of the two would have to be the A-side due to the sermon like vocals and epic horns that are so vital to any big latin tune.

Amadou & Mariam - Dougou Badia (Chancha Via Circuito Remix)

Garnier - Enchanté

The year may only be two thirds of the way through, but having heard only snippets of Laurent Garnier's latest release on Hypercolour has left me in no doubt that this will feature in many end of year lists. It will come as no surprise to connoisseurs of electronic music that Garnier is capable of such masterful, raw emotion and melancholy that is in abundance throughout Enchanté, managing to gently rest on a euphoric cloud whilst piling up the urgency; a sound that anybody who has heard and loved Time, Found A Place or Strings of Life will instantly recognise. Over the past year we've seen him put out a solid run of differently flavoured releases on Chicago's Still Music, Modeselektor's 50 Weapons, Musique Large, MCDE's own label and now Hypercolour. A move which he believes works best for the diverse sounds he has been producing of late, sounds which if compiled onto a single LP would lose impact through stylistic differences and deeper still a sign of faith in an underground scene which is picking up from where he believes it went off 10 years ago. When we come to consider this wider context, a DJ/producer/radio host with almost 30 years of experience, explicit in his decision to stay underground out of a passion for the music over anything else, Enchanté couldn't be more apt.

Fania All Stars - Live In Africa

Superb footage of some delicious Latin grooves from the who's who of Latin music.

Who are the Fania All Stars? A conglomeration of all the best musicians on the Fania record label, a label based out of New York who sold out concerts (even stadiums) not only in New York, but also further south in countries such as Puerto Rico, Panama, Cuba - and also wider across the globe in London and as featured in this video in Zaire, as part of a huge celebration put on in conjunction with the 'Rumble In The Jungle' fight which also saw the likes of James Brown and B.B. King getting down for the festivities.

Perhaps never in any other genre that I can think of, has there been such a group which would feature so many significant names from a particular field of music, all under one umbrella, all so keen to spread their shared passion to the world. So significant is the group that their maiden performance at Yankee Stadium, in front of a 50,000 strong crowd was included in the list of recordings preserved in the United States National Recording Registry.

Amongst the start studded line up for the Zaire concert are Bobby Valentin, Celia Cruz and Johnny Pacheco, all of whom I'd strongly recommend to check out if you are looking to pack your bags, figuratively speaking, and head on a Latin trip.

André Rieu - And The Waltz Goes On

i know this might not be everyone cup of tea, however it is with works like this, that we can appreciate the hidden talents that aren't always discovered. This is a piece that Anthony Hopkins wrote 50 years ago, in a time before he was an established actor. Bravo!!

Why I Came 2 California - Young Pulse

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love this track. Adding a bit of extra sparkle top this boogie classic, Young Pulse beefs up the groove with some dance floor fire from kicks that don't go too far as edits like this tend to do, and some nice little extra claps, hi-hats and guitar licks that are sure to have you shuffling in your chair or walking with some extra bop in your step.

Skeletons - Marathon Man

Been having a huge hankering for anything and everything African the last week or so, to the point where this afternoon I bought this on a whim during my work break this afternoon.

Hope to be able to have you guys round when I get a pre-amp for my record player so we can have a few drinks and enjoy some good records (this one in particular), for lovers of afrobeat, its everything that you will probably know and love about the genre, for those who have yet to dig deeper into the amazing rhythm and soul of African music, then I see this as a pretty great place to start (also highly recommend the Africa 100 playlist - Thanks Tom!). For the afrocentrics mentioned earlier, think raw, Mulatu-esque percussion doused in a concoction of funk fueled by blazing horns, tight percussive rhythms and a fair amount of dub delay.

Logos - Menace

Straddling the divide between grime and jungle, Logos hit us with one of the best releases of last year with Cold Mission. To those uninitiated with the sounds of UK funky, grime and jungle - imagine a sound that would later on spawn dubstep, a sound resonating from what is hard to believe is already 12 years ago now, when pirate radio (think along the lines of Ali G, not The Boat That Rocked) was the medium of choice if you wanted to hear the latest and greatest in underground electronic music. Its 11 tracks of raw beats crafted from all manner of sounds, from gun clocks to synth stabs that will induce a fair bit of spacing out if you are listening on a good pair of headphones.
