Soul Of Sydney 2nd Birthday DJ KON
in Disco, Funk, Review, SoulEver had one of those moments where everything just makes sense? Where you feel completely comfortable getting down amongst brothers and sisters, brilliant music pumping out all evening, and by the end of it, realising you've just had an epiphany of sorts - I give you Soul of Sydney.
I've been following the Soul of Sydney party train for a while with their lineups of internationally renowned funk/soul/disco dons, always keen to check it out but never having the opportunity. It all changed last Sunday when I joined hundreds of disco heads down at Flyover bar at Wynyard for Soul of Sydney's second birthday extravaganza showcasing a man who digs through crates like no other; BBE's Kon.
And so it was on a bleak Sunday afternoon, grey skies threatening to dampen what would be much better suited to a sunny one, I headed into the city for pre-drinks with a Alex and Nat. A few beers later at Harts (that Empress, good lord almighty what a beer!) and the mood was good, we were more than ready for what we expected to be a fantastic evening.
After a bit of a scare trying to find the party (the front entrance to the venue was closed), and a bit of help from Phil Taouk (long time SOS resident DJ), we arrived not, to the dance floor frenzy that I'd heard so much about, but it was still early, time to get a few more beers down us. The small courtyard below the Westpac building began to fill up with a crowd super diverse, the likes of which I'd never seen at a music gig in Sydney. Old and young formed impromptu dance troupes, preaching love above all else, love for life, love for each other, love for the music.
It only took an hour or so before the place was heaving to funk classics, such as this instrumental edit of J.B's 'Papa's Got Brand New Bag', so starting a trend to the night, hearing the songs that we all know and love, but the edits that made you wanna get down to the nearest record store and find them.
Several soul trains later, it was time for Kon, I couldn't kick the anticipation.
If there is one word I can use to describe the skills of Kon it would have to be immaculate. Whilst not demonstrating all that much technical flair, his selection is second to none. Having been to mostly house gigs up til now, my understanding of a DJ's selection of tunes on any given night is - start with some bangers, then after about half an hour work your way into some filler, songs that keep the beat yet don't match the intensity, before heading back into some bangers and repeating this until the end of your set where you play a medley of all your best songs. Kon went through hit after hit after hit stirring up a frenzy the likes of which I'd never seen before.

At about nine o'clock we were informed by the silence from the speakers that the night was unfortunately over. It goes without saying that for hours after the buzz remained, causing it to dawn on me that this night would be a pillar in my musical journey through life. I'm not necessarily saying that this will be the same for you, but for someone who enjoys music with soul, that chunky funk, it's always special when you find a people, a place, an event that sees the world the same way you do.
Make sure to check out Soul of Sydney for upcoming events and other shenanigans.

Gil Ventura - Give Me The Night
in Disco, Funk
Here's the story of one song across three people, the song - Give Me The Night, the year - 1980. Originally written by Rod Temperton as an synthy jazz affair, the song found its way into the hands of two others who did something with it the same year. George Benson began his meteoric rise with help from none other than producer extraordinaire Quincy Jones turning the song on its head and releasing the disco beast within, helping Benson taste success in the American charts. The last character in the story and perhaps the one most forgotten is Gil Ventura who also released his version of the song that same year, the struggle of tyring to find this song anywhere on the internet proves that unfortunately time was never on the side of Ventura's version. Only yesterday did I learn of it as I was ripping some of my vinyls when a song off a record that had otherwise been unplayed since I brought it back from a South American adventure some 4 years ago took my notice. Over and over again I played it, couldn't get enough of the sax, the song was made for it. If you're expecting a moral from this story I don't have one to offer, except perhaps something I knew all along, that one song, one concept is infinite, leaving an intangible trace across time and space touching generations whether we acknowledge it or not.

IS 135 - Skence [Kif Records] by Input Selector
I know I plugged a mix from the same mix series, by the same artist on the radio show released but a few days ago, however I feel this mix definitely deserves it, plug yourselves in for an hour of amazing music (you'll definitely want your best pair of headphones for this one and room to jive...of course!) ...did I also mention his music has been the backdrop to Nat Geo Documentaries, need to get my hands on them!

It's Alright, I Feel It! (Roni Size Remix) - Nuyorican Soul
in Drum & BassMany of you at some point throughout the last week would have taken time to listen to the new album by Daft Punk, whilst it has already caused a great division in many's final reviews, the list of contributors to this album is nothing if not stellar. The excitement that stirred in me when just reading the list of collaborators led me on to find Nuyorican Soul aka. Masters at Work, who a decade and a half earlier, embarked on a synonymous journey - to bring together the leaders in music at that time, George Benson, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente and Roy Ayers to name but a few, to develop an album composed in a manner that each track held its own as a jazz, soul or salsa number, however unifying the album under the banner of house.
This is off the remix album, something Daft Punk have also stated they are going to be doing with RAM, something lively to get you charged for the day ahead, Drum & Bass big player Roni Size with his remix of It's Alright, I Feel It!

Session Victim - Boiler Room Berlin Set
in HouseBOILER ROOM Berlin #010 by Session Victim
Strap yourself in for a 40 odd groovy minutes with German house maestros, Session Victim. Its interesting to note the two started out somewhat in competition (albeit friendly competition), trying to outdo each other through shared mixtapes which carried over to their live sets when they teamed up.
Check out the video of the set as well, not usually something I'd do for a DJ set however there is live bass and alot of energy involved so it is definitely something worth watching.
Flume - Sleepless (Mr. Bill Remix)
in Glitch
Heard this at RabbitsEatLettuce over Easter, took me until the other night just before heading to The HiFi to see Opiuo and Spoonbill to work out it was a Flume remix. Enjoy.

High Contrast - FabricLive.25
in Drum & Bass
Welsh Drum & Bass DJ/Producer, who cites soundtracks to A Clockwork Orange and Blade Runner as defining influences, delivers a brilliant cross section of everything drum & bass. A virtual unknown when he stepped on the scene, Lincoln Barrett has become one of drum & bass' brightest stars. Barrett's topography of the scene is wonderfully charged and delicate at the same time, if you have never taken the time to listen to drum & bass this is the perfect introduction.
