Allnightlong @ Moog Club 24th Aug 2016 - John Talabot
in Ambient, Electronic, House, Mix, TechnoEarlier this year I posted the MCDE v Jeremy Underground 5 hour extravaganza having only listened to a couple of hours of it, perhaps naively putting off listening to it all in one go til a later date. That still hasn't happened, however I have listened to all of it broken up in 1 and a half to 2 hour blocks. Perhaps its just the nature of the type of music in that mix that it doesn't translate well for extended periods. Well today I've got another 5 hour set for your lucky ears to latch onto, and dare I say, it is a much better fit for the 5 hour mix format (if that is even a thing) than the MCDE v JU mix.
I remember the first time I heard John Talabot's DJ Kicks mix, and thinking to myself that it was the first I'd heard a DJ mix that matched the feel and craft of a live set recorded with a whole studio full of gear. All songs are expertly mixed, forming one of the richest musical journeys I can remember hearing for a very long time. Reminiscent of that German slow deep house/tech vibe, this one is perfect for long reading sessions, or a gentle stroll down Boogie Blvd on a Sunday arvo.

Arşivplak - Volga Nehri
in Disco, Funk, Psych, TurkishMan oh man what I'd give to have been present when this photo was taken.
There is practically nothing to find on this Arsivplak character so I can't offer any insights on that, however I strongly suggest you check out his/her soundcloud page which is full of exotic goodies, often at crossroads with disco and funk. Ooft!!
Roberto Roena - Todos Quieren Saber
in Funk, SalsaLove it when latin jams decide they wanna get a bit funky like this one from Roberto Roena. Not quite on the same level as say Coco Seco by Bobby Valentin, Roena rather opts for small injections of funk in the intro and round the 3:50 mark. Enjoy!
Baker's Dozen - No Time Like The Prezent
in Baker's Dozen, Bass, Beats, Experimental, Folk, Funk, Hip Hop, House, Jazz, R&B
It's been a while. Please accept this offering of the latest Baker's Dozen as a make up gift to do with what ever you heart desires. A little write up for each song can be found below the soundcloud widget.
Kadhja Bonet - Nobody Other
I can't remember the last time I heard a voice this good. Whilst I rarely ever listen to music like this, its hard not to appreciate and enjoy it when it's of such quality. The stuff of lullaby fantasy, Bonet's delivery and tone are angelic, conjuring thoughts of a cosy clearing in a forest, glowing in soft light. If you enjoyed this I highly recommend you also check out this, a darker, yet equally moving bit of story telling.
Matana Roberts - Kersaia
You know when you're in the mood to hear something completely different? Having listened to the same stuff for weeks or even months on end, you crave to once again travel to the furthest reaches of the musical landscape. Sometimes, you don't even realise this until you stumble across someone like Matana Roberts, like I did this very morning. Fans of Kamasi Washington will hear a familiar energy and freneticism in the way she plays the sax, and, to a larger extent, the composition of her work. Once you start listening to a whole album of Roberts' music however, you will begin to realise that she takes this to another level, with some of her songs descending into a musical chaos the likes of which Archie Shepp and Eric Dolphy, amongst others, have explored in the past. This cut from her 2011 Coin Coin release, is one of the more tame offerings; a spiritual journey in the first two-thirds that winds back the clock for the last third, with a big band marching sequence that'll have you shaking your straw boater like you aint got a care in the world.
Aaliyah - Rock The Boat (Butcher Brown Cover)
Cover of an R&B classic that manages to improve on the original (in my humble opinion at least). Whilst the original is built in the image of a great deal of early 2000's R&B that used the lead vocal as the main vehicle for melody, Butcher Brown turns their attention to the rest of the instrumentation to add a new dimension to the track. Using the original vocal as a starting point, new layers, rich in melody, work with the vocal to produce a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Only adds to the mystery of how they still have such a small following, when you consider that bands like Hiatus Kaiyote are all the rage at the minute.
Kurup - Gira de Sereias
A nice little Brazilian beat to get the body moving. Unlike some efforts at re-appropriating folk songs that are quite heavy handed in approach when adding a new beat on top of the original track, Kurup here has managed to strike a good balance.
Souleance - Mais Um
It's Souleance, need I say more?
Persian Empire - Ernesto
An interesting blend of jazzy breaks and tech-house that constantly keeps you on your toes; changing moods and styles effortlessly, whilst managing to maintain and build on all that comes before it. Having followed Persian Empire for a while now, I've always felt that there was something missing from their productions, or rather that given time, they would finally manage to nail the sound that you could hear they were going for, but hadn't quite fleshed out.
Matt Deguia - Champion Wrist
Dubby dancefloor killer, only wish it went for an hour longer.
TEK.LUN - Aburoy
See 'Kurup - Gira de Sereias' above.
Persies - Ah Ndiya (K&F Edit)
It seems that now, more than ever, is the golden age of the vinyl only disco/house edit. With new labels of this ilk popping up on what seems like a daily basis, the quality needed to ensure your label gets the necessary attention is also on the rise. Upon listening to their first two releases, it seems that Persie Edits will be around for a while to come yet, with this, the A side from their second release, being a standout. It'll have you moving or your money back!
Dego & Kaidi - Black Is Key
One of the grooviest colabs around, Dego & Kaidi have built quite the repetoire of modern funk jams. Typical of their afro-futuristic aesthetic, everything is centred around the dankest of bass lines. Synths sparkle, stab and whirr whilst the vocals constantly gain new voices, evoking the feeling of an ever growing party on your spaceship headed through galaxies.
Earth Trax & Newborn Jr. - Flute Track
Hypnotic groove off the always excellent Rhythm Section INTL. One of my favourite releases of the year.
Jubilee - Stingray Shuffle
Rounding things off is a tumper from Jubilee's first album. Bass heavy without being obtrusive, this is definitely one to play in the car if you've got a decent sub.

Baker's Dozen - Derby Dozen
in Acid, Disco, House, TechnoBeen on a housey/techy/dancey tip of late, oontsz from 9-5 and then during dinner and in my dreams. Despite the very real danger of burning out and needing a good week or two on no music/ambient stuff, I've decided to strike while the iron is hot. Some interesting stuff in there amongst some classics.

DJ Haus - No Sense EP
in HouseAs we've all come to expect from Clone's Jack For Daze imprint, 4 straight up dance-floor burners that bang like no tomorrow. First up on the A side is the title track, in classic jackin' house style melody is thrown to the wayside and in its place, every nook and cranny is crammed with heaving sequenced drum kicks, claps and hats. Where the song really comes into its own is through Legowelt's re-imagining of the track; which should come as no surprise given Legowelt's legendary status as a producer of some of the tumpinest cuts out there. Moody strings and vocal snippets take the tune to the next level, giving it purpose and direction, sure it still fits the four to the floor mould pretty tightly but there is a bit more ebb and flow to it which I'm sure we all can appreciate.
The B side starts off with the Acid Dub of In The Body a tune that if anything is timely given the recent re-imagining of the TB303 from Roland. Whilst the bass line hits in all the right places, I'm not completely satisfied with the working of vocal sample; in parts it does feel like your old flogging of the dead horse. Sure, the right combination of people and drugs might make it less noticeable, however sometimes restraint speaks louder than playing a sample from the same cue point a million times.
Rounding tings off is the Vin Sol's remix of the same track. Whilst the tempo is kicked up a notch, Vin Sol has chosen to give the arrangement a lot more breathing room, the squelching acid bassline is nowhere to be heard apart from a few points. There doesn't seem to be too much going on apart from bringing certain tracks in and out, however every release needs its lowpoint and unfortunately this one is it.
That said, still a solid release, will be rinsing the Legowelt remix for weeks to come.

Paz e Futebol 2 - Sonar Kollektiv
in Bossa Nova, Jazz, MPB, SambaAwesome second installation to the Paz e Futebol compilation series. Once again it covers output from Brazil that doesn't stray too far from jazz and soul. Kicking things off nicely is Raffaela Renzulli's 'Asking Eyes', a musical sunrise if ever I'd heard one. Darkness, in the form of spaced out jazz blues, suddenly turns into bright sunshine, you can picture yourself on the beach, smooth rhythms in the background and coconut in hand. From there it doesn't take long for things to warm up, Minas' 'Calma Mulher' and Quarteto Uai's 'Marcas' bring some funk into the equation if only for a brief moment as the following two tracks swing the shift back towards traditional Brazilian sounds.
Like the first instalment of Paz e Futebol, Jazzanova have managed not only to source the best of Brazil with the likes of Ed Motta and Eumir Deodato, but have extended their vision to the rest of the world with the likes of Hardkandy from England and Nathan Haines from New Zealand also featuring. Thus, the compilation is able to, and does, oscillate between new and old, familiar and strange, the whole way through.
For highlights its hard to go past songs that I already knew and loved before listening to this compilation like 'Daqui Pro Meier', however I'll certainly be going back to listen to 'Marcas', an infectious pop/funk tune made for listening on your way to, or at the beach. I'll also be coming back for the laid back jazzy groove 'Boa Noite Meu Filho', 'Dia De Furar Onda No Mar' for its unique marriage of Italian film score with Brazilian rhythm and finally Fafa de Belem's 'Naturalmente', a fierce groove that screams protest song thanks in no small part to Fafa's driving delivery that builds and builds, single handedly carrying the rest of the ensemble through energy alone.
Overall, its another solid compilation from Sonar Kollektiv, there's something for you no matter how far your journey into Brazilian music is. Just a reminder that if you do enjoy it, to first, make sure to check out Volume 1 of Paz e Futebol. Secondly, have a listen to our latest episode of Soundsweekly Radio where we covered world music. It features a great deal of Brazilian magic plus goodies from other corners of the globe, a mix that is sure to please!

Soundsweekly Radio Ep.13 - World Tour
in Afrobeat, Bossa Nova, Deep House, Funk, Gypsy, House, Jazz, Latin, Mix, Radio, Soul
Serious vibes. We haven't played much music of the worldly variety in the last few radio shows so we figured what better way to make up for it than a whole show full of exotic goodies. Narrowing down the track list to a reasonable length was difficult, with the first recording totalling a solid 3 hours and featuring more variety than a pack of Assorted Creams. However, in the interest of listenability, we've refined it to its absolute best, all tumpers, no fat, with a more coherent vibe through-out as well. So without further a-do, its time to grab your passport and head for your boarding gate, next stop ... the world!

What Up Doe? Vol.1 - Byron The Aquarius
in Deep House, Disco, House, MixHot off the press! After having missed him play at the ol' Spice Cellar (now just called 'the Cellar'), you can imagine how chuffed I was when I saw this pop up on my soundcloud feed this morning. If you've ever listened to his production work, think jazzy spaced out house jams, then you'll surely enjoy this. Its less jazzy and more disco/funk/groove oriented with a couple of bass heavy deep house numbers to keep things chugging along nicely. As you amy have noticed this is vol.1, so hopefully we can expect many more 'What Up Doe?) mixes of equal or superior quality in the future.

Tuxedo Connection - Hitomi Toyama
in Disco, FunkEngrish game is strong on this one. Sure, I could have posted this up because of the mad vibes its throwing your way, but when it comes down to it, I just can't get enough of those whack lyrics.
In all seriousness though, its still a great jam once you get over the initial reaction to the 'trying to be sexy' phrases popping up when you least expect, like a drunken foreigner trying to pick up using the odd phrases they half remembered from a movie they watched years ago.
Get Off Your Seat And Jam - Super-Wolf And The Funk Ville Band
in FunkCalling all cosmic funkonauts, international funkateers and inter-planetary beatniks. On the ones and twos is The Funk Ville Band on what seems to be their only recorded material ever (according to discogs), and Super-Wolf doing his thang on the mic. The stanky-ass groove combined with disco flourishes here and there gives it a vibe akin to early P-Funk. Perfect for getting up for a big night or as the backbone to a good power strut playlist.

Motor City Drum Ensemble vs Jeremy Underground - RA 530 9 HOUR SPECIAL!!!
in Deep House, Disco, Funk, House, Mix, Soul, TechnoWell well well!! After we were all left salivating from their exploits last year, (which was also put up by Resident Advisor) they've come back for round two which lasts a whopping 9 hours (that's no typo folks). As expected it features the juiciest cuts of funky disco all the way through to the bangin'-est house and techno. I've only gotten a few hours into it, but the mix is as solid as you would expect from the duo who are at the forefront of mixing classic analog jams with modern tumpers. Connected by threads of soul and sheer boogie-ability, this is one I expect to be rinsing for months, if not more. Get on it!!
DOWNLOAD - Not sure how long RA keep their mixes online, but may as well get it before it's too late.

The David W. Niven Collection of Early Jazz Legends 1921-1991
in Jazz
You can probably imagine the thoughts racing through my head upon stumbling across quite possibly the largest, legally free, downloadable, meticulously tagged and organised collection of jazz recordings on the web. What to listen to first? What exactly is in this collection? How on earth do I find the time to listen to all of these?
Whilst all these questions remain or have only just begun to be explored, I find my feelings of near intimidation, at the hours of listening pleasure available to me, diminish as I read through some comments written by original compiler, David W. Niven. Upon learning of the immense passion and effort put into this compilation by Niven, its as if a portal between his day and ours opens up. His very human desire for his children to share his love of the music is something this writer, and hopefully many of you can also relate to; that when we all pass on, that our life's love and labour will somehow transcend us and continue to provide the same excitement, inspiration, solitude and comfort as the first listen, whenever that was or will be.
As I mentioned earlier, I've yet to even begin to scratch the surface of this epic compilation, however it is already clear that Niven's selection of 'legends' is not too far off what you'd expect. Whilst this may provide the perfect way in which to make your first foray into the world of early jazz, it seems to certainly have the breadth and depth to allow for this collection to also serve as a way of finding new recordings of artists we may already be familiar with. Furthermore, Niven also offers brief commentary at the beginning of each tape for those keen on learning about each artist and particular recording.
I could really yap on all day at the brilliance of the David W. Niven collection, however that would be besides the point and would also take away from the time you could be enjoying the trip back through time in your cassette tape spaceship.
Keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks for recommended tapes to listen to as I begin to make my way through this huge collection.

Paulinho da Costa - Belisco
in Brasil, Jazz Funk
Some epic jazz funk form Brasil this time round, a new name to add to the ever growing list of back catalogues I need to check out. Paulinho's arrangements are chock full of slick percussion that acts as the spine for densely layered compositions that feature a wide array of sounds both typical of the jazz world and some from da Costa's native Brasil. Prime theme-tune material and excessively groovy.
