Garnier - Enchanté

The year may only be two thirds of the way through, but having heard only snippets of Laurent Garnier's latest release on Hypercolour has left me in no doubt that this will feature in many end of year lists. It will come as no surprise to connoisseurs of electronic music that Garnier is capable of such masterful, raw emotion and melancholy that is in abundance throughout Enchanté, managing to gently rest on a euphoric cloud whilst piling up the urgency; a sound that anybody who has heard and loved Time, Found A Place or Strings of Life will instantly recognise. Over the past year we've seen him put out a solid run of differently flavoured releases on Chicago's Still Music, Modeselektor's 50 Weapons, Musique Large, MCDE's own label and now Hypercolour. A move which he believes works best for the diverse sounds he has been producing of late, sounds which if compiled onto a single LP would lose impact through stylistic differences and deeper still a sign of faith in an underground scene which is picking up from where he believes it went off 10 years ago. When we come to consider this wider context, a DJ/producer/radio host with almost 30 years of experience, explicit in his decision to stay underground out of a passion for the music over anything else, Enchanté couldn't be more apt.
