Soundsweekly Radio Ep.24 - Xmas Special 2017

Well if it isn't christmas again already, feels like yesterday I was making a mix for last xmas. This year I've cooked up a two course soulstravaganza. First, of the bappin variety with some R&B and hip hop to help you work off some of those unwanted xmas calories. Following this, and rounding things off, are a bunch of my favourite soul numbers, guaranteed to give you a bit of that feel good to get your holiday season off on the right foot.

As is the usual at this time of year, Soundsweekly would like to thank and send big love to all those who have supported, listened, loved, boogied to, shared or simply browsed through the site. Here's to another year of big tunes and debauchery on the mixer.

Language warning - the first half hour contains some foul language, if this isn't your thing then feel free to skip to about half an hour into the mix after which point everything is as wholesome as newborn baby jeezy.

Soundsweekly Radio Ep. 21 - Space II

From the depths of the deep, deep jungle, we turn our attention towards the final frontier. Space was one of the first ever themed shows we ever did here at Soundsweekly and we felt the time was ripe for a return voyage. As there were simply too many jams to pack into one show, we decided to split it up over two.

Satellite is an ode to the many shades of the vast nothingness of the great beyond, perfect for zoning out if you're ever feeling inclined to do so. Voyager, as its title suggests, is more of an adventure; packed to the brim with galactic oonce and cosmic boogie, you'll feel as if you've travelled a hundred parsecs in the space of a few hours. You don't really have to listen to them in any particular order or together even.

Drums of Passion - Babatunde Olatunji

Immaculate. That is the only word I can use to describe this album. Outstanding album from one of the greatest percussionists to have ever been recorded.

One of the most important musical lessons I ever learnt was given by close friend of mine who explained art as an act of the building and release of tension. Baba belongs to a long line of musicians like Fela Kuti, Herbie Hancock, Pharaoh Sanders, Abdullah Ibrahim and Chico Hamilton to name a few, who are able to build these trance like rhythms that to the uninitiated can sound a bit simple in its endless repetition. However Olatunji is perhaps unique in that his music often dwells entirely in a state of tension, or rather, he is able to find the release within tension itself. Where others will build up to a state of tension, Olatunji will use it as a starting point.

And that's only for the songs that are predominantly percussive. His vocal melodies and harmonies are quintessentially African and one could argue that he has played a huge role in creating the African musical identity despite, like many other African music heroes, relying heavily on the diaspora to spread, and keep alive, his native traditions.

Essential listening.

PS. Just had one of them moments when you realise that a song/a couple of songs you liked by one dude was actually ripped off another dood. Don't worry Serge, I'll still always love you.

Deer Forest - Pierre Dutour

You're going to want to close your eyes for this one. A magical gondola ride through the stars awaits. I absolutely adore how the track gently moves through emotions, introducing elements and tension in a seemingly organic fashion. If meditation were offered in the form of a pill, this is probably the sound that would come out of the bottle when opening a bottle of those babies.

Guadaloupe Ile de Mes Amours - Eric Cosaque

Awesome loungey jazz-funk number with plenty of blue notes and even a sprinkle of synthesised accompaniment in the background just to make sure that no matter your palette, you'll be plenty satisfied.

Texico Special (ymana Luscious Jive Edit) - Texico

A little edit I done did. If you're in Sydney next Friday (26th of May), come down to Thiq in Neutral Bay where I'll be playing stuff like this and plenty of other goodies as well.

Soundsweekly Radio Ep. 19 - Love In The Time Of The Blues

It's that time again folks. Something for the romantics, the soul heads and anybody feeling them blues. The result of a bit of an experiment I decided to conduct, there is no mixing involved here (bar the last 3 songs). Instead this is an exercise in song selection, which resulted in a journey that will hopefully take your soul for a ride through all the shades of blue, with some brief pit stops in the territory of a few other colours to keep things fresh.

A very brief sampler of the incredibly rich and deep pool of sounds that is Brazil. Soundsweekly Radio Ep. 18

You're on your daily commute into the city, its just like any other day. Somewhere along the way though, you slip into the slipstream of a subconscious. Its heart beats to the klang and bleep of metal boxes clogging up the backstreets of its arteries. With each turn of your head, layers stack upon layers stack upon you. You best believe that if you're not careful, the city, it'll swallow you whole.

It's been a while between shows but we're finally back!! For the second show in a row its the unstoppable duo of Marty & Alex (aka ymana & striccly riddims) going deeper than ever into all sounds weird and wonderful. Stay tuned for more journeys like this in the coming weeks (we're trying our darndest to get the next one out as soon as possible), and also don't forget we deliver audio vitamins on pretty much a daily basis now. What more could you ask for?

Bobby V. - Disco Baby (Floating Points Edit)

Don't let the title fool you. So far as the internet is concerned, a track called Disco Baby by a dude called Bobby V does not exist. The identity of this Bobby V character is equally as mysterious, with plenty of speculation and barely any hard facts being thrown around in youtube comments sections and forums alike. All we do know is that a few copies of this do exist, albeit I'd speculate its nothing official, probably just a gift from FP to close friends like Hunee and Red Greg who have both supposedly played this one out.

Its hard to put an exact value on how much the feeling towards this song grows once it's rarity renders it the stuff of legend, or at the very least shrouds it in a thin veil of mystery that even in the age of information is frustratingly elusive. Whilst you can't own the track (just yet, fingers crossed), a rip from FP's Essential Mix is on youtube so its not all bad, if you do find that it is released one day or happen to stumble on the samples used/original tune holla at ya boy, it would be much appreciated!

UPDATE!!! (29 Apr 2017)

So! If you are following our facebook page, you may have noticed that earlier today I managed to stumble upon the original of this track! And its lead me to make some interesting conclusions about the FP edit (if you can even call it that).

Firstly, the original is called Disco Baby (so I was wrong above, it was literally called Disco Baby) by a dude by the name of Yaron Gershovsky, a keyboard player who's output (or at least all of it that is recorded on discogs) is quite short, and also quite different to this track. So far as I can tell, it was only ever included on one library music record put out by Major Records in 1979. Listening to the two I can't find any differences between the original and the supposed 'Floating Points edit' which leads me to believe that in fact, a Floating Points edit doesn't exist. As to the reason why give it a different name if no editing has actually been done, I'm none the wiser. A few theories I have are that Sam (FP) is trying to keep the track a secret, or that legendary bassist from the Fania All-Stars, Bobby Valentin, had something to do with this track (there are probably a million more Bobby V's in the recording business around the world so this one is a real long shot). Regardless of that, the story behind the label that released this tune is quite interesting.

For those who are familiar (I certainly wasn't), Major Records (and its parent/sibling label Valentino Inc Production Music Library) is somewhat of the go to library music label. And if you don't think you're familiar with the label, then I can assure you that you've most likely heard one of its many releases before.

Perhaps its greatest musical talent/writer/producer was Walter Murphy. You probably know Murphy as the dude for the disco classic A Fifth of Beethoven which featured in Saturday Night Fever and also snagged a grammy. Head honcho at Major Records/Valentino Inc, Thomas Valentino,

That said, a good deal of the label's output features unknown names, generic sleeves and untitled releases, which I guess is the norm for library music catalogs/labels. It is, however, a treasure trove of samples, many of which you have probably heard before. Nicholas Flagello's Wailing Wail is perhaps one of the most sought after of these tunes, with its horn shrieks and general tense vibe being repurposed in Wu Tang Clan's Unpredictable as well as probably a bunch of other tracks.

Eyes of Love - Edge of Daybreak

The tale of the one take wonder is the stuff of legend in the music world. Serge Gainsbourg's piece de resistance, L'histoire de Melody Nelson, was supposedly written in one night.  I'm sure you can all remember vividly, a moment of live music where rather inexplicably a host of intangible forces collided, resulting in a fleeting moment of euphoria on both the part of the artist and the listener.  Such moments have an air of divine inspiration to them, and this album is certainly a fine example.
Recorded in only 5 hours by inmates of the Powhatan Correctional Center, Virginia; this is a document that lays bare some of the rawest soul put on record. Written and played by a group of individuals deemed unfit by the state and society, there is a strong contradiction at heart here, which upon each listen reveals deeper layers and forces the listener to consider some of our most basic concepts and truths. If nothing else, it is a testament to the human condition in the face of grim circumstances, serving as a reminder that some of the greatest, life-affirming art often comes from the darkest of places.

It's also two for the price of one this time round, as this is the first time we've brought in a second pair of hands behind the decks, its our favourite Russian groove monster, Alex, who has kindly helped curate this aural excursion. As the last few have been more oontscey, we've gone for higher contrast in tempo and aesthetic this time round and we're sure you'll love it just as much. Definitely one for your daily commute to and from work, some chilled beverages of your choice in the local park or just relaxing to at home in your favourite state of undress.

Marcellis - You

Whole album is absolute fire. Huge range going from lower tempo, more soulful grooves like this, to stomp your feet and make room oontsczers. Left of field, yes, but with more than enough substance to justify the trip.

Mad shades of Thirstin' by Jack J, which is never a bad thing! Luscious, hypnotic groove that'll wash over like waves on the shore, lap'tup!
